Knowledge sharing brings new services to UK and Ireland clients

Ever since the integration of DWP and Royal Haskoning began, staff at both companies have been working together to gain a greater understanding of each other’s services and expertise. Knowledge sharing about technologies, working practices and projects is one of the main benefits that bringing the companies together is achieving. This in turn will create opportunities to expand what’s on offer to clients.

“There are clear areas where each company has specialist skills,” says Graham Bignell. “At DWP, our core business essentially revolves around developers within the private sector and this has been the case for more than 25 years. We have built up a reputation within this sector which is ably demonstrated by the volume of repeat business we obtain. Meanwhile Royal Haskoning’s involvement in transportation planning mainly involves clients from the public sector and is principally led from its team in the Netherlands.”

In order to formalise the knowledge sharing process, a Transport Integration Group was established last September, as Graham explains: “Representatives from DWP and Royal Haskoning in the Netherlands meet regularly and are developing strategies to enhance each team’s respective capabilities. The focus is very much on gaining a greater understanding of everybody’s skills, and especially how we can leverage our combined strength to our clients’ advantage.

“One way that knowledge sharing is already working is with the use of microsimulation software packages. These are increasingly becoming beneficial to clients and local authorities in the development of solutions to highways planning and safety issues. DWP already had capability in this area but now we are tapping into the experience of the specialist team in the Netherlands. They have a track record of using the software in projects across Europe, so there’s a wealth of experience we now access to broaden the range of simulation options we offer to our UK and Ireland clients.”
