Royal Haskoning provides scholarships in ThailandAccording to the AIDS Division of the Ministry of Public Health in Thailand, almost one million people have been infected with HIV since the start of the epidemic. At the present time, half of the people infected with HIV have developed AIDS.
Already many AIDS victims have passed away, leaving young children behind. These orphans who lost their parents because of HIV/AIDS have to grow up in broken families, usually in very poor circumstances and lacking the opportunity of development. Dr Sem Pringpuangkeo set up a Foundation and launched a Foster Parents Program in 1995. With the assistance of outside contributions, the Foundation has the goal to create a better quality of life for these orphans and give them educational opportunities to enable them to be more productive members of Thai society in the future. Royal Haskoning started contributing to the foundation in 2004 with 34 scholarships and gradually increased the number of scholarships over the last years. On May 2, the scholarships for 2008 were given to the children in a ceremony near Chiang Rai in the North of Thailand. Margriet Hartman, manager of Water and Environment at our Bangkok office, presented on behalf of Royal Haskoning 59 scholarships. "The organization wants to give the children a future and is aware of its social responsibility. Education is one of the remedies for this society’s burden. We want to help to give these children a solid basis for their future careers”, says Mr. Chuchawal Pringpuangkeo, the son of Dr. Sem Pringpuangkeo and the Joint Venture partner of Royal Haskoning in Thailand.
