Royal Haskoning has been assigned a new, prestigious task under the terms of its existing master contract with the US Army Corps of Engineers in New Orleans. The area around the city was devastated a few years ago by Hurricane Katrina.

A major American construction company is going to build a flood barrier on an urgent basis on the high-risk eastern side of New Orleans as protection against further hurricanes. Project manager Mathijs van Ledden from Royal Haskoning has been appointed as a management team member on behalf of the US Army Corps of Engineers in the project team tasked with supervising the construction. This is the biggest design and construction project in American history and the estimated cost is around $ 700 million. Royal Haskoning has been actively involved in determining dyke heights around the entire city of New Orleans since 2006. “We were asked to do this because of our knowledge of dykes, waves and water levels, but of course this is a splendid opportunity to share our extensive global expertise in the field of flood barriers with the US Army Corps of engineers,” explains Mathijs van Ledden.
