Romania’s strategy for the management of contaminated sitesLike many countries, Romania shares the challenge of dealing with the legacy of past industrial activities. A uniform and cost-effective approach to investigating and cleaning up contaminated sites is one way to address the environmental and health issues. Therefore, the Romanian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development decided to develop a national strategy to manage such sites. With World Bank finance in place, Royal Haskoning was selected to manage the project.
Green Power in Agri-Business ParkAlgaepro™ is a Cradle-to-Cradle principle. This concept involves using the residues of waste water from industrial companies and households—residues that are then transformed into high-grade biomass, biodiesel or energy by means of algae cultivation. Royal Haskoning is going to develop and build the technology with algae specialist Ingrepro to turn waste products into foodstuffs. The two partners have signed a letter of intent to develop Algaepro™. They are in discussions about the application of algae technology in an agri-business park, where high-quality agricultural and horticultural products will be cultivated.
De Ronde Put Flemish nature reserve investigatedHow do we arrive at a responsible and well-founded organization and management plan for De Ronde Put nature reserve in the province of Antwerp, taking account of Europe’s Natura 2000 ambitions to achieve a coherent network of protected nature areas? That was the question that the Belgian Agency for Forestry and Nature put to Haskoning Belgium. The answer: let us carry out an eco-hydrological study so we can predict what the effect is on nature if it is interfered with.
A new petroleum jetty of national importance to the Eritrean economyThe Eritrean port of Massawa on the Red Sea is set to benefit from new international investment. The port has two 1930s jetties used to import petroleum products and LPG into the country. One of these, on Hirgigo Bay, is in very poor condition and needs urgent replacement, so the World Bank and the European Union are funding the construction of a new jetty to replace it. Royal Haskoning is designing the jetty and providing other services to the State of Eritrea.
High-Profile Architecture in the Wijnhaven areaA splendid and spectacular building has been added to the Rotterdam skyline between Maasboulevard and Blaak. ‘The Red Apple’, commissioned by PWS Rotterdam to a design by KCAP Architecten and in collaboration with Jan des Bouvrie, is shooting up at the tip of Wijnhaven Island. It is a bright red 120 metre tall complex. A shining example of daring and high-profile architecture, which offers the occupants a view far over the Maas. The complex has a great deal of office and retail space as well as dwellings. Corsmit Raadgevend Ingenieurs, a subsidiary of Royal Haskoning, were closely involved with the building as consultants.
St Petersburg flood barrierSince time immemorial St Petersburg has had problems with flooding. This is because of the somewhat unfortunate location that Tsar Peter the Great chose for the city at the time it was built. In the 1970s work began on the building of a flood barrier, which was two thirds complete around 1988. However the dam was blamed for the deterioration in the water quality in the surrounding areas and the building work was stopped. Studies, to which the Netherlands contributed, showed that it was not the dam but a water purification plant that had polluted the water. By this time, however, completion was no longer an option: the Soviet Union did not exist and the money was gone. In the end construction was at a standstill for almost twenty years.
