A new petroleum jetty of national importance to the Eritrean economyThe Eritrean port of Massawa on the Red Sea is set to benefit from new international investment. The port has two 1930s jetties used to import petroleum products and LPG into the country. One of these, on Hirgigo Bay, is in very poor condition and needs urgent replacement, so the World Bank and the European Union are funding the construction of a new jetty to replace it. Royal Haskoning is designing the jetty and providing other services to the State of Eritrea.
As well as designing the jetty and its ancillary works, Royal Haskoning carried out a feasibility study and will also produce the tender documentation, manage the tender process and prepare the contract documents. Another important aspect of the project is to ensure the existing oil jetty can be maintained in an operational condition until the new facility is functioning. It’s a project impressive in size as well as national significance, as Pablo Jimenez explains: “Some 7,000 cubic metres of concrete, 1,500 tonnes of structural steel, 30,000 cubic metres of rock and 7,700 metres of pipes will be used. This is needed as the new jetty needs to accommodate tankers up to 50,000 DWT (and up to 80,000 DWT in the future) bringing oil products and LPG into the existing storage facilities onshore. “The jetty approach will comprise a rock bund in shallow water and a piled trestle in deep water. The loading platform, berthing and mooring dolphins will all comprise piled suspended deck structures. Onshore works include road access and pipes and pipe tracks linking the jetty to the existing storage facilities. The construction contract is due to be awarded at the end of 2008 with a view to start the construction works in early 2009.”
